In the 1920’s and 1930’s Coney Island became known as the nickel empire. People flocked to Coney Island to bask in the sun via the five cent subway system. To avoid pricey bath houses, visitors paid five cents to change at dirty residences. With the influx of the masses to Coney Island, prices of entertainment were eventually forced down. Rides lowered their prices by half and the 10 cents rides could be experienced with just a nickel. Visitors played games for five cents to impress their loved ones with a cheap a prize. Even the famous Nathan’s hotdog started off at 5 cents to compete with the unaffordable 10 cent hotdogs bought at Feltman’s. Once a resort area for the wealthy, Coney Island was transformed to the nickel empire where anyone could satisfy their five senses with just five cents.
