Fountain of the Dolphins
Created by sculptor Steven Dickey and is located at Sand Lane and Father Capodanno Boulevard.
This piece of art shown above looks like a regular sculpture to many but for Staten Island natives, it has become a staple. This art is recognized by many on the island and to me this art work speaks the message of community. This is right at the entrance of the parking lot at South Beach, where families go to spend time with each other and enjoy their day. Since it was placed at the entrance I think it represents unity and community since the beach is a common ground where many meet and enjoy life. People come together and have a good time while disregarding their problems or issues. Although the statue was dedicated to James P. Molinaro, I think it is viewed and understood by people as a representation of family and comradery. At the time of this writing, there was construction being done in the area so the look of the statue was hindered since it usually is a center piece of attention but due to the cones and roadwork, it was not as noticeable. This statue is a staple in Staten Island that many have seen and it serves the purpose of bringing people together in a positive way.
And play, right, who loves to play in the ocean more than a dolphin?
