This past week’s guest was one of the more intriguing guests we have had. In the past, I though street art and graffiti were just random pieces for the sake of vandalism. However, Rich’s experiences would say otherwise. He taught us about the culture behind street art, which most average people do not understand or know. His stories about the nights he and his group would go to work showed us how important their work was to them. For example, Rich told us a story about one of his run-ins with the law in the subway. He specified how they left the subway at about 3 AM, having not completed their work. He told us that his partner told him that they would get something to eat and then finish the piece. Their work was so important to them that they went to finish it so early (or late). Though Rich mentioned how that was not part of his plan, he went through with it for the sake of the project. It was interesting to learn about an art form like street art. Most people would not consider it art at all, but to someone like Rich, street art is one of the most complex forms of art there is. At the end of his speaking time, Rich taught us how to make a “bomber. ” This use of a marker and ink seems simple, but there is a method to getting the best quality. Like all other art forms, street art has a practice to be perfected, and a culture to be observed. Unfortunately, very few actually observe the culture that is found in street art. Personally, I would like to know more about this culture. Especially from the taste Rich gave us.
