Our most recent guest, Geoffrey Doig-Marx, is a dancer and painter, as well as one of my personal favorite guests so far. I am not a dancer and know very little to nothing about the art. However, Geoffrey managed to make it interesting and understandable. He also talked about his passion for painting and how it began. Personally, the most interesting part of his visit was learning about his life and the difficulties he faced in the environment he grew up in. It was most interesting how he ended up sacrificing his life with his parents for his passion for art. Not only that, but how he seems to use that as a way to empower himself rather than dwelling on it and resenting his past. When we asked him about a hot-button issue that has been a theme in our class, whether business taints art, Geoffrey gave a great answer. He explained how his passion for the arts had to become a form of business so he could survive alone the way he did. Now he teaches his art to others for a living, and, as he mentioned, has given free classes because of the current pandemic. Overall, Geoffrey was a very interesting and very informative artist to learn from.
