Going into this movie, I had high hopes. The music was engaging and powerful. As soon as the “plot” began, though, all hope was thrown out the window. First, although Benny is the antagonist, he is clearly the most likable and redeemable character. Yes, he turned their power off on Christmas Eve, a petty thing to do, but in all fairness, they did not pay their rent FOR TWO YEARS (“we’re not gonna pay last year’s rent, we’re not gonna pay this year’s rent”). In any other situation they would be jailed and sued for all they owned. Benny not only gave their stuff back when he took it later in the movie, but in the very beginning of the film offered a studio to his friends if they ended the “protest” being held by Maureen. The characters go on to drag Benny’s name through the dirt and make fun of his dead dog (and Angel was responsible for the dog’s death). The movie also has no plot clear plot. There is little background, the characters seem more disjointed from one another than they should be, the music does not always match the mood, and how the characters know each other isn’t entirely explained. They are collectively a hot mess, a group of cheaters and entitled creators. Mark considers himself as selling his soul just for getting a job at a news company. Maureen is disloyal, Mimi started her relationship with Roger by breaking into his room. Overall, I did not enjoy this musical, but I will say I liked most of the music.
