Gina was interesting to meet considering she acted as Lady Day and that’s who I did my project on. It was nice to meet someone who had played someone I researched for so long. What interested me the most was that in order to embody her character she avoided watching other people perform her. I hadn’t really thought about how playing someone playing a character would be different from just playing the character. I also really respected her view that doing what she loved was more important than the money she makes when asked about money specifically. Even in the hard times the pandemic has brought to the theatre industry, she’s been able to stay both strong and passionate. A common theme among the artists we’ve met is that they all seem really passion-driven and it’s nice to see.
