Protest art: An Eye for an Eye

Was a female protester shot in the eye by the Hong Kong Police Force? - Black Dot Research

This piece of protest art was made during the Hong Kong protests/riots, as a response to an incident in which a police officer fired a rubber bullet at, and hit a medic who was tending to a protester’s wounds. This piece and its variations is frequently captioned as, “An Eye for an Eye,” calling for escalation and further demonizing the communist Chinese regime. It is because of this art piece that the injured medic was turned into something of a folk hero, and was became a symbolic figurehead behind the protests. This reminds me of another piece of protest art, Paul Revere’s engraving of the Boston Massacre in 1770, which shows British soldiers firing on civilians as if they were part of a firing squad, which has become one of the most famous pieces of art that helped define the American Revolutionary War.

  1. Cool piece, I had not seen this. It is interesting looking at the unrest in Hong Kong side by side with the unrest in the US.
