My Thoughts on Christopher LoPorto

During this week’s class, we were introduced to Christopher LoPorto, creator and lead singer of the band Can’t Swim. This was the first time we viewed music as an art form instead of painting, and I feel that Christopher did a great job of displaying its influence. He helped display how creating music is an effective way to express your personal emotions. As an example, his song “Your Clothes” described a personal relationship experience from the past. Although this pertained to him, people around the world that listen to the music can relate to it, displaying the reach of its influence. I think that another important aspect of our discussion with Christopher was how he described the bands that influenced him when he was younger. They not only gave him the ambition to create his own art, but allowed him to experiment and make his own kind of music. This made me realize that every artist has had some kind of role model that they use to make something unique on their own. Christopher described how he obtained the members of his group and how they have become such a larger part of his life. Additionally, they have toured and were able to meet new people while creating new music for people to enjoy. This illuminated the idea that art can bring people together as a common ground. Similarly to the other artists that we had the opportunity to converse with, a great sense of passion was present. Every experience and song that he described to us had its own identity, which I believe is important. After this meeting, I was excited that we were able to view music as an art form at a greater depth and were also able to learn more about Christopher and his life.
