Prof Drabik

Hello! Here is my beautiful and wise creature that’s no longer with us: the bundle of pure joy, generous in love. Penelope, the noble beast and very much beloved.

I should be enjoying the completion of over four-years-long project: the translation of the fascinating book by Andrzej Bobkowski Wartime Notebooks. France 1940-1944; it is finally done, published, launched into the world…

Besides, I love Rio de Janeiro’s beaches and hiking in the Adirondacks, good books and good music, and when my students finally start asking questions.

With my best,

your prof. GD

Andrés Olmedo Orejuela

Dear seminarians,

Like all of you, I attended CUNY after high school.  For two years I studied in the Honors Program at Baruch College, CUNY. I then transferred to Wesleyan University, from which I was graduated with a BA in Film Studies and almost immediately after went to teach in Spain and Italy for three years. Back in New York, I began the doctoral program in Comparative Literature, during which time I applied to become an ITF. Seminar One is my favorite honors seminar, although I’ve had wonderful experiences in Seminars Three and Four. I’m rather interested in novels and movies, so if you have questions or would simply like to talk about either one I’d be glad to have a conversation with you.

Gregory Sabel

Hi! My name is Gregory Sabel. Kinda. My legal name is Gregory Sabel, but my Hebrew name is Yisroel Chaim Sabel, and that is what I have gone as for a vast majority of my life. In Jewish day and high schools, as well as Jewish summer camps and jobs I have always been referred to by my Jewish name, and this year is the first time I have been referred to as “Greg” for a period longer than a week and it is certainly strange. I am going for a major in business administration and management, while simultaneously studying pre-med. I hope to go to medical school after CCNY and specialize in psychiatry, following in the footsteps of my mother. I am an avid fan of electronics, and have built my own custom 3d printer, as well as built my own computer. I played hockey in middle and high school, and wish I could have the time to play again, but alas college takes up too much time. I worked at a camp for special needs children and love to work with them. I am excited to continue my journey in CCNY, and am happy to have been integrated into the Hillel here.

Grace McGrath

My name is Grace, and I’m an Electrical Engineering major, with an intended minor in classical studies (and computer science if I can work it out to take all the classes). I was born and raised in the Bronx, and went to high school on the Upper East Side. I was a Girl Scout since I was five years old and just recently aged out of it, having earned my Gold Award project, where I started a maker club at an after-school center. The idea for the project came out of my own interest in amatuer tinkering; I attended Maker-Faire my junior and senior year (and I’m sad I couldn’t go this year), I did a senior independent study on making a tiny robot, and I really like playing around with Tinkercad (I want to learn how to use Autocad soon). In my free time I also really enjoy trying new restaurants/bizarre food places all over the city, watching youtube videos, specifically Buzzfeed and Cut videos, reading (I like detective/crime fiction a lot), and painting.

I have really enjoyed being in class with you all so far, and I’m so excited to get to know you all over the next few years.

Hailey Lee

Hi! My name is Seoyeong Lee but I made people call me Hailey. I was born in South Korea and moved to Fresh Meadows, Queens four years ago. Although I learned English as a second language in school, I never spoke it in my daily life so I had some struggle with getting used to speaking and listening in English.

As I moved here, math and science became easier for me so I began to have interest in them. I’m currently registered as an Environmental Engineering major but I’m planning to switch into Chemical Engineering because chemical engineers involve in a various interesting field such as chemicals, fuel, drugs, food, and many other products and they have more job opportunities.

I played fencing and table tennis in my high school. However, I don’t play sports anymore since I got tired from school work and commute. My commute used to be 3 minutes during my high school years so I am still not used to a long and tiring commute. When I get home, I do my homework, listen to music(mostly K-pop), and read light novels. I love eating Pho, Ramen, and Malatang. I like to stay home and sleep but I also enjoy hanging out with friends. I’m usually quiet in front of a group of people but when I get closer to you I will be talking more and become a sincere friend. I hope to get to know you guys better!

Kyle Abrahams

Hi, my name is Kyle Abrahams and I’m majoring in psychology at CCNY.  I have lots of interests in the humanities, but I’ve found that I love the social sciences most of all.  I would like to be a therapist or do some other kind of clinical work some day.  Outside of school I am a huge music fan and love finding new artists and genres to listen to.  Photography is a hobby of mine and like to take pictures (especially portraits) when I can.  I also love basketball and could talk about it all day despite never liking a team that wins as a long-suffering Knicks fan.  In addition to my major, I would love to become fluent in Spanish soon as I have been studying it for a while now.  Feel free to say hi or talk to me about anything I’ve mentioned if you see me around!

Jyotsna Kokkottu Joy

My name is Jyotsna Kokkottu Joy and everyone calls me Joy. I am a Macaulay Honors student at City College. I am a Biology major on a Pre- Med track. I am a first generation immigrant from India. I moved to America four years ago with my family. I grew up in a small village in Kerala, India. My mother tongue is malayalam. I enjoy visiting India because most of my family members are there and I get to enjoy traditional foods that I can’t get in America.

My hobbies are reading, cooking, and drawing. I enjoy making indian food and I try to cook for my family at least twice every week. I love spicy and sour food but I dislike sweet foods. My favorite food is biryani. I like to read autobiographies, nonfiction, and fiction. My favorite book is “My Sister’s Keeper” by Jodi Picoult. I like listening to music and I mainly listen to Indian music and BTS. I am an introvert so I like to spend time alone or with a small group of friends. Since I am shy and it is difficult for me to make friends in new environments. But I always try to meet new people and make new friends. I highly value friendships and family. I enjoy being in nature so I like walking in parks, listening to birds, etc.

It is such a pleasure to work with an amazing group of people and I hope to have an awesome 4 years with all of you!!!

Cynthia Poon

Hi, my name is Cynthia Poon and I am currently a Macaulay Honors student at the City College of New York. I am majoring in Biomedical Engineering and may go on the Pre-Med track. I actually was more interested in Biology when I was in high school. I loved the way my teacher taught and the fact that we performed a lot of dissections was a plus! I’ve always been interested in cellular processes and how relevant it is to the natural world. As an Engineering major now, I hope to learn from this new field of study while also incorporating something I am truly interested in. In my free time, I’m a homebody, as in, I love to stay at home and relax in the comforts of a familiar environment. I love to hang out with my family and read in the warmth of my room. I like to read a variety of genres, but I especially love to read sci-fi and fantasy. It’s almost as if I’m diving into a completely new reality, a world where I can express myself just by turning the pages of a good, old book. The Leviathan series is my all time favorite and the Witch and Wizard series by James Patterson. Recently, my family took in a Shih-Tzu puppy. I never really thought of myself as being one of those crazy pet people, but he has now become my child and the light of my life. Mushroom (yes, we named him after fungus) clears away all my stress and actually forces me to go out once in a while. He’s like a cute, toddling little brother who has mild separation issues, but I love him all the same. He’s always creeping up on my thoughts and if you see me zoning out, I’m probably thinking about him.

I’m always down for a chat, or if you want to see my collection of about 500 pictures of my dog, it’s always a pleasure!

We recently shaved Mushroom, so he kind of looks like a rat in this photo.

Anjali Bryan

Hello! I am Anjali Bryan and I am from Howell, a town near the shore in central New Jersey, where I live with my parents and my older sister. I am pursuing a degree in biotechnology and hope to have a career as a genetic engineer. I am excited to be living in the city for the first time and am enjoying my time at CCNY. I love to play the guitar and travel. I am also a big sports fan. I ran track and played tennis in high school, I am currently playing for the Macaulay marauders quidditch team (even though I know nothing about Harry Potter), and I am a big New York Jets and Knicks fan. My favorite place in the world is Disney World, but if I can’t be there I love to be at the beach and boardwalk with family and friends, eating fried Oreos, ice cream, and butterfly fires. My favorite season is winter because I love skiing and playing in the snow, and because of my favorite holiday Christmas. Family is the most important thing in the world to me, and anytime I am with them is when I’m the happiest.

Self Introduction

Hi, I’m Caroline! I’m from Sea Cliff on Long Island, but I now live in the towers on campus. My hometown is one square-mile, so everyone knows everyone. While I miss being with my family, adjusting to the change of pace in the city has not been difficult; I’ve wanted to live here since I was young. Learning to cook things other than pasta has probably been the most challenging part so far.

I’m the middle child of three sisters. We are all very close and look exactly alike. Growing up in a home dominated by women, I became very interested in feminism and politics. I ran my high school’s gender equality club, and hope to continue that sort of activity in college. My house also has four dogs, which is absurd, but fun.

I’m studying environmental engineering currently, but I most likely changing to environmental science, so that I can minor in public policy. When applying to college, I knew I wanted to do something related to the environment, but wasn’t sure if that would be in the form of engineering, planning, policy, or even business. I’m slowly but surely figuring that out!

In my free time, I sing for the Macaulay Triplets. I also play cello and love books, coffee, and theater. I’m loving Arts in New York City so far and am very excited for what the remainder of the semester holds!
