The provided readings of the history of the High line gave me a lot of insight on its origins. One such part which I found intriguing was the portion which described the primary intent for its creation. The author stated that the High Line was meant to provide a break from the busy and fast New York life. While citizens are hustling about per usual, the High Line was a different world on top. It supplied an environment full of nature and green space everywhere as well as seating and many walkways to encourage socializing and just enjoyment of the outside all together. In recent times however, many have criticized the High Line to be ‘losing it’s once authentic feeling’ for now it focuses largely on the commercialization of the many tourists that travel to experience it. The once genuine, thriving walkway succumbed to the pressure of becoming an attraction and thus many of it’s natural aspects have begun to be neglected. Weeds that begin to grow in the cracks of pavement get pulled out and rotting flowers aren’t allowed to wilt away at their own pace but rather get thrown out immediately as they ruin the “picture perfect perception” the High Line is supposed to hold. This disruption of the natural beauty that was once the highlight only disturbs the authenticity of the site. The photo I took exhibits plants growing on the outside of the gate. I believe this can represent that even the organisms that once occupied the High Line want to reclaim the area. This plant was not able to make it into the bigger picture but was still willing to develop on it’s exterior to make its presence known. I believe proper care is indeed needed to take care of this site however, sometimes the organisms that begin to develop should be allowed the time and space to allow for proper and natural growth.
