Promethean Fire

The final dance, composed of 19 dancers was incredibly powerful. All the dancers including the two main dancers wore the same outfit with, black jumpsuits with bronze stripes. There were slight differences in the necklines of the men’s versus women’s jumpsuits. To me, i saw scorpions writhing. The dance was called Promethean fire. Prometheus is the character in greek mythology who is responsible for introducing fire to humanity- and is therefore responsible for its consequences both good and bad. During the show I had actually though the title of this dance was Sea of Voices (which was the previous dance) and i think that is a more fitting title. The dancers were often arranged in a readable cluster and took turns in pairs preforming moves which I associated with one ripple following another on the broad sea. At points I felt as though they were rowing through a dense sea, fighting the current that pressed against their bodies trying to knock them down. I also felt their lightness- the same lightness of a boat as it floats on water, defying gravity and showing the power of human ability and grace.
The demonstration of human talent ability and skill is clearly there and yet I wonder how much the boat and scorpion references were meant to be in the dance or if I was just reading them into the dance. Had I been thinking of prometheus and all fate of human kind would I have seen the dance differently. Even so, many of the same emotions entangled with the responsibility of fire are present in the idea of a ship at sea. A wonderful opportunity with grave stakes. Risking your life- but creating or seeing things that otherwise would have been unimaginable.
