The Oculus

I captured an image of the inside of the Oculus at the World Trade Center. This space is one of the most intriguing places in New York City because of its unique architecture. The entire building is designed in a fashion that looks very futuristic. The floating platform entrance and bullet shaped elevator contribute to this aesthetic. The space is completely white from the floors to the walls to the support structure to the ceiling. The white color makes the space feel more open and fresh. The sleek lines and curves of the architecture mixed with the bright skylight and large windows are also defining features. I found the space interesting because it serves multiple purposes so I decided to take the image in the center of the space to showcase that. In the very back there is the New Jersey Transit as well as several subway lines; thus, for many people the space functions as a transportation hub. On the sides of the building are countless high end stores and trendy spots to eat. So for others, the space is an area to go shopping and enjoy a gourmet meal. The space is also just an architectural marvel in and of itself so there are many natives and tourists alike that are seen taking pictures throughout the space. The people seen in the space are of all races, ages, and statuses, emphasizing how the Oculus is a gathering spot for everyone to enjoy. Whether one physically engages in the space or just views the space through an image, the Oculus can embody the essence of a winter wonderland, heaven, spaceship, and much more. These associations radiate a calmness which contradicts the crowds of people and fast paced energy that exists. The Oculus is truly fascinating in terms of the aesthetic of the space and ways in which people interact within it.

  1. I really like the way you described the space as open and fresh because I get that feeling from looking at the photograph and the whiteness of it as well. I have seen photos of the Oculus before and I never really knew what it was, but now that I know I actually would like to go and experience it for myself. The largeness of it kind of reminds me of Grand Central, but it does have a completely different aesthetic that makes it unique. The architecture is very modern and sleekly designed to give the viewer a beautiful experience.
