An Interactive Experience

My experience with art is typically very one-sided. I go to a museum and look at the framed or encased pieces and pretend to understand what I am looking at. So one could imagine my excitement when seeing a sculpture that was interactive. Nauman’s moving sculpture forces the viewers to either participate in the artwork or stand by and simply observe others with the art. By participating, you stand up against the walls adjacent to the sculpture and enter an open passageway. Not only is this giving the viewers a new perspective on the piece, but it is a different perspective on art as a whole. We are not forced to stand back behind a line and view a painting from one point of view with this piece. We can walk around, see the different components of the piece, and how everything interacts and works together. The piece itself is somewhat lost on me, but what the piece is doing is what I find to be particularly attractive. I love the fact that I am able to not have to view this through a piece of glass.

The piece itself is reminiscent of something we are all at least somewhat familiar with. Dogs on leashes are something most people can relate to, so it would make sense that Nauman would create an interactive piece that the average person can relate to and find familiarity in.
