I think the play did a wonderful job in explaining the main points the book had covered. Harper Lees adaptation of the book consisted of more than enough information about each character’s life such as, Scout’s school life. The play production believed the school aspect was not a main point in the book as it would not steer away from the main message of the book if it was removed. While watching the play I realized the message it was trying to convey was to never kill a “mockingbird” or else there would be consequences. And the mockingbird in this case would be either Tom Robinson, the African-American, and Boo Radley. The acting was phenomenal as all the actors accurately represented the the characters from the book by adopting their personalities. As a result of this, I felt a lot more emotional in certain scenes compared to when I read the book. For example, the scene with Bob Yule in the court room made me feel very angry as he harassed Tom Robinson in the court room. The scene was more powerful in real life because it helps me connect with the characters themselves as I am watching them.
Another aspect of the play that really brought the story to life were the the costumes the actors were wearing. Part of them expressing the character they represented meant dressing the part too. I believe costumes are very important because it allows the actor to be in the characters shoes literally and it helps them connect with their part. This is also beneficial to the audience as it helps us identify which character is which and helps us see a visual representation. I think the ending of the play did a better job than the book of showing how Boo Radley was more of a hero rather some creep stalking the kids for half the book. Sometimes a visual helps you understand a situation better as one is able to form a conclusion based off what they had scene while it is harder to draw a valid conclusion from just listening to a story because you don’t have a fist person account on it.
I completely agree with you. It seemed like the writers wanted to make sure they had enough time to get through the most major points of the book first and foremost which is most likely why they left out a few details. But like you said I felt the power of the actors and the atmosphere that the play showed.
