Farewell

Elusive Grilled Treats

χαίρετε· I left two very important components out of my last food post: grilled meats and beer. Starting with grilled meats…oh, the elusive grilled meats.  You know what I’m talking about – gyros, souvlaki (with or without pita), etc. Good luck to you if you’re craving one of these, or any grilled food item, for […]

Hellenikon Idyllion

χαίρετε· With just under a week of my trip left, I figured now is about a good a time as any to talk about where we’ve been staying.  The Hellenikon Idyllion is a sort of conference center/youth hostel/music academy/etc. founded by a man named Andreas Drekis (see post on welcome feast for a picture of him), […]

Finding Homer’s Ithaca

χαίρετε· This weekend wasn’t solely dedicated to sightseeing in Kefalonia – one main goal was to look into the notion that modern day Ithaca is not the sight of Homeric Ithaca, home of Odysseus (side note – I believe I forgot to mention this, but the coursework was shifted from its initial form, replacing Xenophon […]

Going to Kefalonia

χαίρετε· Thanks to some immensely generous patrons, our LGiG group had a remarkably memorable weekend. It began with a 3 hour ferry ride from Patra to Sami: Following this ferry ride, we were greeted by a very lively Greek woman representing the Trapezaki Bay Hotel, where we were to stay over the weekend (there will […]

περί τοῦ σίτου

χαίρετε· We’re leaving for Kefalonia today and I’m not sure how much internet access, if any, I’ll have over the weekend, so I’ve decided to post the first of what I hope will be several food-related blog posts. As wonderful as Selianitika is, one can’t help but notice that every menu in town features just […]

Welcome Party

Stepping away from our studies for a night, everyone staying at the Idyllion (i.e. our group and a group of Polish and German opera singers) attended a feast of sorts last night, featuring roasted goat and vegetables, free-flowing wine, τὴν μουσικήν, dancing, and good company.

First Impressions

χαίρετε· Just finished my third seminar and things appear to be going well. There are nineteen of us here in Selianitika, not including the instructors, split into two groups, the more advanced of which is completely immersion based. Fortunately, the group I’m in is being eased into speaking Attic, although that certainly doesn’t mean it’s […]

Here We Go!

χαίρετε· The day of departure is finally here! In just a few hours I’ll be on a [hopefully pleasant] Delta flight to Athens. I’m not sure exactly how I’ll be getting to Selianitika from there, but I’ve been assured that all of that has been arranged. It’ll look a little something like this, though: Now […]
