Recording and Uploading Your Podwalk

Borrow the same type of voice recorder that you used at the Macaulay Night at the Museum. Use the Macaulay A/V Request Form to request and pick one up (three days notice required).

  • Select Record to tape your interviews and talks. Each recording will be saved as its own file.
  • After completing your tapings, connect the recorder to your computer via the enclosed USB cord.
  • Upload the files onto your computer. They should appear as MP3 files.
  • Follow the GarageBand instructions for uploading and editing the file/s.

WordPress consist of Pages, Posts, and Categories.

  • Pages are static and continuous pages. All the information is on one single and continuous page.
  • Posts are separate entries.
  • Categories (which you can find under Posts) are the way that posts are separated and defined.

Hovering over Posts or Pages you can add new. Whichever you are doing, always make changes in the visual editor. This means that the word “Visual” is highlighted.

What you write will appear exactly the same way on the site when you hit “publish”.

Only use the text editor to input embed codes.

Create Podwalk in GarageBand

  • Open GarageBand, select “New Project”, then “Empty Project”, and choose the Microphone icon.
  • Drag and drop your audio file into the center space.
  • To cut out selections, select where you want to cut the track, then split the track. Do this on both ends of the track.
  • Split the track by selecting “Edit” then “Split. After splitting the selection, go to “Edit” then “Cut” to remove the selection. Slide the remaining selections back together.
  • You can adjust the background noise, to an extent, by turning the equalizer button.
  • Once you finish editing your track, go to “Share” then “Export Song to Disk”. Select MP3 when you save.
  • Follow the instructions to save to Soundcloud.

Post Podwalk through Soundcloud

Your podwalks will be hosted through Soundcloud.

  • Log in to Soundcloud either through your own account or your Google account.
  • Select “Upload” on the top right hand side of the page.
  • Choose file, upload, and select “Save”.
  • Once your track is uploaded, select “Embed”.
  • Check the WordPress code box, then copy the code.
  • Paste the code into your site page in the “Text” viewer.
  • You can change the size by going into the code and changing the width and height values.

iMovie Tutorial

Here are some tips for getting started with iMovie.

Getting Started: Open iMovie, then select File < New Project < No Theme < Create.

Upload your video: Create a new event in the event library. Then drag and drop your video into the new event.

Upload any images you want to include: Images can also be dragged and dropped into the event library.

Cut video: Select the section you want to cut, then right click, and choose delete selection.

Split clip: Use this feature to separate out different parts of the project for editing. This can be done by pressing Command + Shift + S.

Insert image: Drag image from Finder window and drop into where you want it in the project. You can extend or decrease the length of the image by

Insert Text: Press Command + 3, choose your type of text, then place where you want it in the project. If you place it over a clip, there will be no additional background. If you place it between clips, then you’ll have options for that text clip’s background.

Insert Transition: Press Command + 4, choose your transition, then add it where you want it to appear.

Insert Audio: Audio can be dragged and dropped into your project.

Adjust Audio: Scroll over the clip to reveal a gear on the bottom left hand of the selected clip. Then click on the gear and select “Audio Adjustments”.

Attribution: If you are using video, music, or images that are not your own, give credit where credit is due. Watch this video to learn more.

Fair use images: Some good sites for finding images include Creative Commons and Wikimedia Commons. Also try Google Images advanced search option which allows for modifying your search by usage rights.

Fair use sound: iMovie contains free use movie clips that can be found by selecting the music note icon. Apple has a great link to free and fair use music sources. Also try Jamendo and dig.ccMixter. You can use up to 30 seconds of any song under fair use laws.

When you are done: Select File < Finalize Project. You will then need to share your video on YouTube so that it can be embedded on the class site.

Embedding on YouTube: Within iMovie, select Share < YouTube. Within YouTube, select Share < Embed < then copy and paste the embed code. In WordPress, enter the Dashboard. Use the Text viewer, then paste the embed code.

VLOG (Video Blog) Instructions

For your Video Blog assignment do the following:

  • Open up Photo Booth from Applications on your computer
  • Choose the record a movie clip (film strip) icon
  • Press the red record button and begin recording
  • Choose the stop button to finish recording
  • Play the video to preview and trim if necessary
  • Trimming can be done by highlighting the sections that you want to hover over
  • Scroll over the video in the bottom menu, right click, and select “Reveal in Finder” (leave this window open)

YouTube Uploading and Embedding

  • Open up YouTube in your browser and select “Sign In”
  • Choose “Upload” on the top right hand side of the page
  • Drag and drop your file from the Finder window
  • Give your video an appropriate title
  • You can make your video Unlisted or Public, but NOT Private, then select “Publish”
  • View your video and preview it to confirm its quality
  • If you want to make additional changes, select the “Creator Studio” which can be found by hovering over your user avatar.
  • The Creator Studio is fairly intuitive and good for improving the lighting in your video
  • Select Share < Embed < then copy and paste the embed code.
  • In WordPress, enter the “Dashboard”. Use the “Text” viewer, then paste the embed code, and “Publish”

 

Edit Your Profile

Be sure to edit your profile so that you are easily identifiable on the class site.

Go to the “Dashboard” then select “Users” in the left hand toolbar and “Your Profile”.

Make sure that your first and last name are accurate. Then choose FirstName LastName for the “Display Name Publicly As” option.
