Gentrification in Chinatown
Chinatown, which has been home to the Chinese for several decades, is now gradually becoming home to the White population. Since Chinatown is a conveniently located neighborhood in Manhattan and the rents are not as expensive as most other parts of the city, many Whites are moving into the neighborhood. The White groups mainly settle in the outskirts of Soho near Broom St, Elizabeth St, and Spring St. They are mostly young people known as the “hipsters” and as a result of their move, many bars and restaurants have opened in the area. In order to better serve the people coming into the area, Chinatown’s buildings are being reconstructed to replace the old tenement apartments that existed earlier. Many of the earlier apartments were poorly built and thus, the new apartments offer more space and better quality housing. As a result, apartment prices are slightly increasing and this is affecting the Chinese immigrant groups.
