“New Years, New You. ” This has been a great marketing scheme for many different business to sell their products to the American middle class for decades.

New Year’s Resolution: Self-Betterment
The quintessential image that comes to my head when I think of New Years are fireworks and the ball drop in Times Square. Time Square, in my opinion, is the epicenter of capitalism at work. It’s full of so many different businesses and people moving about freely. The Gregorian New Years which we all know occurs on January 1st of every year has become nothing but a free day to do nothing but party. Almost everyone I talked goes on vacation, cruises, or parties on this day.
The amount of money that is inquired by so many business during this season is fantastical, which can be reflected in the bonuses that so many Americans receive during this time. Through people I talked about their experience, many said that alcohol and partying are very much in alive during this time of the year. When I asked about which alcoholic beverage was the most common, by no surprise it turned out to be champagne .

The extent to which this holiday has become commercialized is enormous to the point where this holiday has come only known as a party holiday. Business prey on this image of new years to make a lot of money. Plane ticket prices are increase dramatically, the prices for ride-sharing apps increase significantly, and much more. The prices of many luxury goods go up due to the higher demands of them during this time of the years such as cruise and hotel prices. The cheapest time to travel has been proven to be two weeks after new years, which is known as dead week. This occurs because people tend to not have much disposable income after spending it all and the demand falls below average, forcing prices to become extremely discounted.

How Airlines Change their Business Models Based on the Time of the Year
This change shows how New Years has such as impact on the business cycles of so many different businesses, due to the sudden yet cyclic rise in demand for certain products during this time period and a drastic and cyclic decline in demand shortly after the event. The affect of New Years in present in the airline industry, as can be seen by the price of a plane ticket. Before the holiday and a week after the holiday, the price of a plane ticket becomes super expensive. During the dead week, plane tickets are heavily discounted because not as many people are traveling for these two week.
The basic affect of this holiday and its placement along with other holidays like Christmas shows the significant impact of holidays in business models and cycles.

This blog post was great. I thought the material was straight forward and the photos you provided supplemented the text well. Furthermore, I would suggest adding how families of different immigrant groups celebrate the secular New Year. Media filled with a variety of responses would be interesting to view.
