The Phil-Am Food Market, which is located on 70-02 Roosevelt Ave, New York, NY 11372, boasts a wide variety of Filipino groceries and food imported directly from Philippines. The store began its business in 1976 when the Filipino population was just growing in the neighborhood. According to the owner, there were only three Filipino stores open at the time he started up, most of them being restaurants. Now, a multitude of Filipino stores can be found lined up along a single block; big Filipino chain, Red Ribbon, is among those stores as well as big hits like Pearlas and Ihawan. Although the Phil Am Food Mart is no restaurant, it is an excellent place to get what you need to make that excellent Filipino dish.
As an aside, the owner also commented on the Filipino migration to Jackson Heights, saying that it was done out of convenience so that Filipino’s could be much closer to the city. Consequently, each person would bring over friends and family from the Philippines to live in Jackson Heights with, causing an influx similar to other immigrants.
