Andy Warhol

Mr. Warhol said that art is anything you can get away with. And that sums up this semester. We have seen some spectacular art that fits well within the definition of “art”, but we have also seen many things that are outside the box. Art is what you make of it. You should never go into an art show with a closed mind, well you shouldn’t do most things with a closed mind, but that has never stopped us before. I think that to get the most out of our experience in New York we should maintain the open mind we have developed in this seminar class and apply it to the rest of our time here. Life will be much more beautiful if we start to look for art around us and broaden our definition of what is art, because then we will be able to unlock more of the magic New York City has to offer us. I can’t wait to explore more and I am so happy that this seminar taught me about the grandeur of New York art.

Everything is art…right?

Me and Arizona Iced Tea…yes, some may say it’s an addiction, but what can I say? It tastes good! So to comment on my “iced tea addiction,” my roommate jokingly told me that I should display them somewhere in my dorm.  Little did he know that I was actually going to display them.  Do you see them? Right there above my bed.  Right above the “Super Sayan” hair that I got from ComicCon and next to some posters of games and the Filipino flag.  This is my “attempt” at being artsy by using the skills I gained from this class.  Similar to that of Andy Warhol’s Campbell Soup Can painting, I just arranged my empty Arizona Iced Tea bottles side by side.  There are only about eighteen bottles there, and I drank much more than that.  But there was no more room so I had to start recycling the other bottles.  Anyways, the only difference is that each item is the same and I don’t think Andy Warhol put empty Campbell soup cans on top of his bed haha.

IT’S NETLATE WITH JANDON BRUDELL!

This is our Final Project for Arts in NYC.  It incorporated just a few of the many fun and great things that we did this semester.  It was really fun making this video and putting it together with these guys.  Definitely going to miss all of these events and performances that we went to together this semester, but at least we still have our Cultural Passports that we can use to explore other art forms in New York City! 🙂

Enjoy:  NetLate with Jandon Brudell!

This is our final video for Judell’s class. I know I speak for my group as a whole when I say I had an amazing time in this class and will truly miss it next semester. I am so happy to have seen so much of New York culture and can’t wait to see more on my own. Thank you Professor. Wednesday Morning Dead

The Benefits of Education in the Arts

I found this article that offers some interesting opinion on the benefits of an arts education. Here is an excerpt and the full article can be found here:

“Specifically what arts-deprived kids are missing is explored in ‘How the Arts Help Children to Create Healthy Social Scripts’ by Liane Brouillette of the University of California, Irvine. She argues that for children to become successful adults, they need to know more than just how to read, write and multiply. They need to learn fundamental social skills, such as the ability to ‘persist in goal-oriented activity, to seek help when needed, and to participate in and benefit from relationships.’

The arts are an invaluable teaching tool in this regard, in that they ‘naturally and frequently involve group tasks,’ she notes. ‘Activities such as dramatic play or dancing in unison provide a venue for learning collaboration and cooperation.'”

Do you agree with the author’s statements about an arts education? Has this Arts in NYC seminar caused any of these benefits for you?

[I certainly agree that an arts education makes us more social, but so does scientific research, collaboration in the laboratory setting and research presentations.]

The Next Time You See Art, STOP! Then STARE and ADMIRE…

Today I came across a term I never really heard someone say before–the term was “artless.” Although it seems self-explanatory, I looked it up and some synonyms that I found were “unsophisticated” and “naive”–two quite powerful words. I was a little shocked–I didn’t know that without art, someone looked that ignorant. I guess math and science aren’t enough to impress people. 🙂

Therefore, the next time you see art, stop and appreciate it–otherwise, you will be considered simple-minded.

Bringing it Back to Barbershop

Sunday night, amidst studying for finals, writing papers, and working on final presentations, I managed to schedule some time to go watch the Voices of Gotham’s Winter Show at Symphony Space. Of course, I had to forgo a significant amount of sleep, but it was definitely worth it (no matter how much I complained about how difficult it was to wake up Monday morning)!

The 2012 Barbershop Harmony Society International Qualifiers, the Voices of Gotham, gave a spectacular performance that included a well-harmonized rendition of Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas.” The show also featured barbershop groups such as ‘Round Midnight, Noteworthy, Flatiron Four, Who’s on Seventh, and the internationally acclaimed O.C. Times. As I sat on the edge of my seat, I soaked in the soothing smooth blend of voices and listened to one of the first forms of a cappella music introduced to the world. Although I would’ve appreciated better acoustics within the theater, the choreography and music were quite vivacious and coincided with the Christmas spirit. My favorite piece of the night was definitely the mash up between Let’s Do It (Let’s Fall in Love) and Let’s Misbehave. Although one of my friends in Voices of Gotham remarked that he was sick of the arrangement after so many practices, the chorus’ hard work definitely shines through as well as each members’ individual personalities which is a rare quality in choruses because of how these arrangements try to unify the various voices for each vocal range. The choreography definitely demonstrated the boyish charm that manages to span the great age range within the group, which averages the age of 27 years old. On the other hand, it became clear to me that smaller barbershop groups allowed time to showcase each member regardless of their voice part.

One of the modern alternatives to listening to barbershop music could be watching the Voice-Off which features various talented a capella groups. However, since I know some of the members of Voices of Gotham personally, I will continue to follow their progress and perhaps find a chorus of my own to join!

Happy Listening!
