Art underneath NYC: Golden Statues in 14th Street ACE Station

The artist responsible for this much needed twist in the dreary subway system is Tom Otterness. The entire collection is called Life Underground and was completed in 2000.

I’ve always wondered why those statues are there. Now I know.

See more at: http://www.nycsubway.org/perl/artwork_show?21                                                or you should visit the station the next time you’re on the A,C, or E trains (or L).

I’ve seen those before – in addition to various other forms of underground art, some legitimate and some not so much. Pretty neat!

Those statues are very cute! Oh, and with the picture with the old man and woman, they didn’t notice you taking pictures of them?

  3. Linda says:

Never mind my question. I thought you took these pictures. But, they’re very nice anyways.

Please note the political aspects of these sculptures. They are totally anti-capitalistic. In fact, these figurines are the original anti-Wall Street protesters.

Oh I also remembered where else I saw these sculptures! There’s a park next to my high school in lower Manhtattan and it’s filled with sculptures by the same artist. In my four years there, I never bothered to look up who made them. But now I know. Thanks!

Yep. Right by Stuyvesant! I always hung around that park when I was little. I never realized the political purposes behind their making though. They’re really incredible!
