I don’t even know where to begin! I’ve only ever been to a few Broadway shows in my life, but this is hands down my favorite one yet. Three young (and pretty cute) sailors, Gabey, Ozzie, and Chip, arrive in New York City for just 24 hours before they return to their ship and they’re out on a hunt for different things. Chip is out to sightsee and see everything in the city he’s only ever heard about, while Ozzie is out to find himself a city girl, and Gabey is out to find “Miss Turnstiles,” Ivy Smith. We follow along with the three sailors as they begin to realize how grand and adventurous of a city New York is. The transitions between scenes where we would see the police officers chasing Gabey and the boys and the old lady running around would have me crying tears of laughter every single time.
The scenes where the subway cart is just a formation of the cast swaying as if they were actually riding on the subway were genius and were better executed that way rather than putting them on an actual train prop, in my eyes. I thought the set design was beautifully done in a clean and organized manner, especially the boxing scene and Coney Island dancing scene. Also, the scene where Ivy Smith was dancing with a group of men for the Miss Turnstiles competition, it immediately hit me that this was a replica of Sara Mearns’ Broadway choreography, specifically the part where she walked onto the hands of the men, my absolute favorite move.
After intermission, a few of us asked if we could sit in the balcony seats right near the stage since they were empty and we were allowed to, so we grabbed our seats and watched the characters up close, now even seeing every little facial expression on each character. My favorite characters of the play were definitely Gabey and Hildy, however, my ultimate favorite was without a doubt the erratic and vibrant Madame Dilly. I loved her so much that I would go see this musical again just to see her perform!
I absolutely loved loved loved going to see On the Town! I’m glad I could make it because it was witty, fun, and overall simply stunning and made me feel happy to be raised in a magical and vibrant city like New York. It really is a helluva town!
