1. Night at the Museum: September 14th at the Brooklyn Museum
Wander the open galleries alone or in your group (or both!). Look closely at the works of art that catch your eye. Then, as a group, choose two works of art to record a conversation about — one that you all find engaging, and one that you all find challenging. Don’t rehearse! Your conversation should be natural, ideally no longer than 6 minutes long. Take a photograph of each of the works, using your cellphone or a camera, and email them to museum.night@macaulay.cuny.edu. Note the artist, title, and date of the work of art.
A bus will transport students from CSI to the Brooklyn Museum. Make sure to sign your bus forms, which you will receive on class Wednesday, September 14th. You will give them to Lisa French as you board the bus.
2. Media Arts Workshops: September 24th and 25th at Macaulay Central
Working with the same group from Night at the Museum, you will use iMovie to edit together the conversations you recorded and photographs you took to create something like the Smarthistory videos you saw on IDEA Day (when you got your laptops). Attend whichever workshop you signed up for on IDEA Day. Make sure you bring your laptop!
3. Snapshot NYC: October 11th
On this day, all Macaulay freshmen will take a photograph of somewhere in any of New York City’s five boroughs. You will select one photograph to upload to our online gallery, and then a group of volunteer student curators will work together to mount a physical exhibition at the New-York Histortical Society. All students will be invited to see the exhibition – more details on the exhibition’s date and time are to come.
4. The Opera: October 19th at the Metropolitan Opera
Mozart’s Don Giovanni debuted at the National Theater, Prague, in 1787. Originally set in Seville, the Met’s production takes place in an unnamed Spanish city in the mid-18th century. The Met’s site about this opera is here. (Don’t click to buy tickets!)
