Jen,
It is very interesting that you chose this excerpt from the book, “The Color Purple” from Alice Walker, because the story is very emotional and the main character is very complex. According to the book, the main character, Celie, writes in the form of letters to God because of the abuse she faced from her father, Alphonso. She later on met Shug Avery, the character from the excerpt you mentioned, who was a singer. Celie slowly became infatuated with Shug Avery and it is exemplified here as Celie is combating her inner desires that urges her to have contact with Shug Avery.
Your erasure poem is captivated me in that you captured the highlights of not only this excerpt, but also the deep thoughts and desires of Celie. Your poem made me focused on Shug Avery by illustrating the way she talks and the way she dresses. These all demonstrate how much Celie thinks about Shug Avery. Another important point, is the last parts of your erasure poem. The phrases represent Celie’s hopes and the desire of freedom. She wanted to go out, to dance on top of motocars with Shug Avery and leave behind her sufferings. Hence, I love the way you created your erasure poems and its details about Celie’s love.
