I work with evolutionary ecologist Dr Kelly O’Donnell to produce Macaulay’s annual BioBlitz. A BioBlitz is a 24-hour species survey of a specific area. At Macaulay, our entire sophomore class participates in a BioBlitz as the kickoff event for their Science Forward seminar. Our first BioBlitz was in 2013 in Central Park, followed by New York Botanical Garden in 2014, and Freshkills Park in 2015. Dr O’Donnell and I coordinate over 30 scientists and 450 students to create an immersive learning experience, expose students to ecological field work, and give them an authentic research and data collection opportunity. Students work with the data over the course of the semester and produce scientific posters to present original research at a final event.
