Macaulay Scholars Council Meeting #3
December 2nd, 2012 — 1PM

I. Welcome and Announcements from Drew

Macaulay is doing its best for support relief efforts for Hurricane Sandy.

During finals week, from December 13-21st, the Macaulay Building at 67 Street is open 24/7. There will be coffee, tea, and snacks.

Macaulay participates in the National Conference On Undergraduate Research (NCUR), which will take place from April 11-13, 2013 at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. If you have done research, you can submit abstracts to participate in the conference by December 4th. http://macaulay.cuny.edu/community/now/2012/10/ncur-2013-abstract-registration-opens-october-1/

Macaulay Kitchen

Permission is necessary to use the kitchen at the Macaulay Honors College Building.

You have to submit a request to Andrew Adair (andrew.adair@mhc.cuny.edu) and/or Olga Barskaya (Olga.barskaya@mhc.cuny.edu),a week in advance. There have been students randomly using kitchen without permission, which cannot happen anymore.
II. Club/Pub Updates

  • Macaulay Business Club: no representative
  • Macaulay Pre-Health
    There is a talk by Dr. Bruce Gordon, a physician at NY Presbyterian Hospital, at the Macaulay Building on Friday, December 21st from 1:30 pm onwards. To RSVP, email Anthony Ventimiglia (anthony.ventimiglia@macaulay.cuny.edu).
  • Macaulay Pre-Law
    On Thursday the 6th, 7 pm -8:30 pm, there will be an informational session by NYU School of Law. To register, go to: http://macaulay.cuny.edu/community/rsvp/event-registration/?ee=197
  • Macaulay Pursuit of Happiness/S.T.E.M.S Service Club: No representative
  • Macaulay Model U.N.
    Model UN members are in the process for registering for a conference at NYU that will take place a week after Spring Break. The cost for attendance is $55, which will later be refunded by Macaulay Honors College. For more information, contact Hansol Lee (hansol.lee@macaualy.cuny.edu)
  • Macaulay Global Medical Brigades
    There was a film Blue Gold screening by the Global Brigades Club and the Movie Club on November 30 at 6:00 pm.
  • Macaulay Musicians’ Collective
    • We are hosting our annual winter concert this Friday at 7pm. The collective will be performing some instrumental pieces and members of the triplets will be doing solo performances accompanied by the band.
    • Beyond that, we’ve been recruited for some CUNY events, one upcoming in January for pay (which is cool)
    • Rehearsal will take place on 9 pm Thursday, because Seminar 3 will take precedent over the one on Wednesday
  • Macaulay Triplets
    • Performed at Bing this past weekend
    • Members of the Triplets will be performing at Macaulay’s Winter Concert this Friday
      They made the regionals for college Acapella groups. If they do well, they will go to Nationals.
  • The City University Film Festival: CUFF at Macaulay
    Cuff committee will be meeting this week on Thursday, December 6th at 7 pm. This will be at the Dean’s Conference room.
  • Macaulay Movie Club
    They had 3 meetings and have collaborated in movie screenings with the Gastronomy Club and the Global Brigades club.
  • Macaulay Gastronomy Club
    They are having a collective on Saturday, 15th [check with Mariam, for the exact date]
  • Macaulay Press: no representative
  • Macaulay GA
    They have an event “Deconstructing the Ivory Tower” in the Macaulay Building’s Lecture hall on Friday, December 7th at 5 pm. Register here: (http://macaulay.cuny.edu/community/rsvp/event-registration/?ee=203 ). The group is also showing a paper they present at National Collegiate Honors Conference
  • The Macaulay Marauders
    They made the world cup. They were at a tournament at Hofstra on Sunday, December 2. They are ranked 5th in the region out of 600 teams internationally and they one of the top 50 teams in the nation. The world cup is in April in Florida, Tampa.
    They will be doing a lot of fundraising, because they need to raise $10,000.
  • Macaulay Theatre Group
    They had a food drive that ended last week. There will be a movie night where there are films of musicals towards the end of finals.
  • Macaulay Improv Group: No representative
  • The Macaulay Messenger
    They are publishing more events. They need more staff members who will be covering events.
  • Macaulay Vlog
    The group was on hiatus for this semester. There will be a format change it will be revamped to focus on Macaulay talent including writing, art, music,
  • Macaulay Dancers
    They met recently and had a workshop.

III.Events: Recap and Upcoming

Carla Hall has an author event, Monday Dec. 10, 7-9. This is for foodies.

  • Winter Concert: is on December 7th  @ 7pm
  • Bryant Park Ice Skating Event (Thrusday, Dec 20, at 6 pm):
    First 25 people to sign up will get $10 off for skate rentals. There will be a movie in the screening room after students are finished skating.
  • Financial Literacy Workshps:
    Dr. Gerald Rosenfeld, who NYU Proffessor, is leading workshops that provide information about credit card debt, investments, etc. There will be workshops on January 8th, 9th, and 10th.   • Monday Jan 14th, 3:30 – 7:30. Preparing to be a post-college job applicant.
  • Internship Fair: is on Friday Jan 18th, from 12 pm to 3 pm.
  • A blood drive for victims might occur in January but details are tentative.
  • Common Ground
    This is the 4th annual year with this event. There are different cultural shows, food, etc. The event will be most likely conducted in Late March.

  • Academic Affairs
    College Council is now almost like a defunct council. They are making a special committee for redoing governance document.
    Suggestions for improving MHC classes curriculum should be emailed to Joe Borello, so that Dean Kirschner, Pearl and Ugoretz can hear the ideas.
  • Community Service: ChairàJoe Borello
    There is a huge database of volunteer work with volunteer organizations in US and even the world.
  • Student Life: ChairàKaitlyn O’Hagan
    • Macaulay Olympics: Anthony Ventimiglia has been working on the issue. He is trying to reserve Governor’s Island for Olympics because of its central location.
    • Spring Formal: Michael Tal has taken over organizing the formal.
  • IT/Communications: ChairàKannika Khanna
    A new webmaster is necessary for handling My Macaulay& the MSC website, and someone needs to handle facebook. If you are willing to help with any of the tasks, please contact Kannika Khanna (kanika.khanna@macaulay.cuny.edu)Kaitlyn and Kannika are thinking of creating an online Macaulay Honors College yearbook. Seniors are requested to help.

VII. Campus Updates

  • Baruch:
    Classes have been reescheduled to Sundays. They are making a park close to Baruch so they are closing a street nearby.
  • Brooklyn:
    South Asian Student Association had an event.
  • CCNY:
    Increased MHC student body has started affecting the college. Conflicts of BME and honors classes have been taking place. Some departments have had to modify class schedules as a result of these conflicts.
  • CSI:
  • Dean Pearl came to CSI and had a sit down with students. Macaulay has represented at NCUR, and some students are attending during that time.
  • Hunter:
    Most student body is still displaced because Brookdale is still closed. Makeup date for classes is on December 13th.
    On Wednesday, December 12th, there Macaulay students at Hunter will conduct their first event for Macaulay Hunter.
    There is a meeting regarding Brookdale Tomorrow. .
  • Lehman:
    The College has posted up Honors Classes for students. This will be availiable via My Macaulay portal.
  • Queens: No representative
