Seminar 4: Shaping the Future of NYC
Sustainability and Emotion

Visiting the Sherman Creek Park exhibition at the NYC Center for Architecture served as a perfect segue to Constance Haydock’s “Sustainable Sites Initiative” presentation. During her presentation, Haydock mentioned that the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation planted a number of little gardens along sidewalks throughout NYC. The gardens’ purpose was to create a sustainable environment while simultaneously providing an aesthetically pleasing addition to the neighborhood. Haydock mentioned that residents felt as though they were walking down Park Avenue, known for being adorned with flowers in the summertime. Residents felt like the city cared about them. The Sherman Creek Park located in a lower income neighborhood will create a similar feeling among residents while also acting as an environmentally friendly space. I think the project as a whole is ambitious but with proper funding and efforts will be positive addition to the area.
