Seminar 4: Shaping the Future of NYC
Early Start

Sustainability has become a popular topic in recent years. In a city that’s rapidly growing, architectures and landscapers are searching for new ways to preserve the natural environment. Our lecturer, Constance Haydock discussed many examples of how newly constructed parks and open spaces aim to be sustainable and environment-friendly. Our visit to the Center for Architecture complements Haydock’s presentation and serves as a great example of how one of several organizations, New York Restoration Project, is working to spread the importance of sustainability. Not only does the EDGEucation Pavilion serve as a space for recreational purposes, the designers intended for this space to serve as an outdoor classroom. By spreading the idea of sustainability at an early age, landscapers and architects are helping with the improvement of the environment in the long-run.

On the down-side, I believe the exhibition would have had a greater impact if more space was dedicated to it. Although the images were able to portray most of the restoration project, descriptions could have been more detailed. At the same time, not all of the images were able to clearly depict a message; this ultimately became an issue for visitors like myself.
