Seminar 4: Shaping the Future of NYC
Building Within a Building

In architecture, as with anything else, design is crucial. Designing an aesthetically pleasing building is just as important as designing its ability to stand tall and just as important as portraying a certain message with the design. Designing a museum dedicated to architecture then proves to be a difficult task. The NYC Center for Architecture tries its best to give visitors a look into some of the city’s best architectural designs while also trying to be aesthetically pleasing in its small space. The overall layout of the museum was very friendly—lots of clear and open spaces balanced by areas of pure knowledge and information. The walls were decorated with pictures, photos, plaques, and panels of information about various architectural and design projects that have taken place in New York City. Downstairs, the museum plays off its small space by having panels of information jet out from walls, creating a 3D vertical flipbook for visitors to enjoy. As well, scattered throughout the floor are actual real models—some of housing designs to evade floods and others a model of an earthquake and its effect on land. All in all, though small, the NYC Center for Architecture manages to convey and design an interactive space dedicated to architecture.
