Seminar 4: Shaping the Future of NYC

Course Readings

Week 1 Reading for February 4, 2014:

Berman-Intro

Beck What Is Globalization

Rocket Machine Economist 1 18 2014

Writing Assignment For February 4, 2014:

Please do the three readings assigned in class, available here on Blackboard, and then answer the following question in a 1-page opinion paper (post your 1-page opinion paper to the course blog by Sunday night February 2nd by 9 p.m., AND print it to hand in in class for Feb. 4th.):

What key concept or concept can you identify from these readings that you think provides the best way of linking and understanding all three articles? Discuss and make an argument for why the key concept(s) you have identified make the most sense for understanding these readings, and for understanding the increasingly complex world that is confronting 21st-century New York today.

At the TOP of your 1-page opinion paper please have the following heading: Your Name, IDC 4001H – Prof. Maciuika, current date

Be sure to give your opinion paper a brief, telling or compelling, interesting or funny, evocative or thought-provoking TITLE — one that distills the essence of your argument into an eye-catching and inherently interesting title that, in effect, “invites” your reader into the world of your 1-page, masterfully written piece.

Also, because all the opinion papers must be posted to the blog by Sunday night at 9 pm, you are requested to post, sometime before 9 p.m. Monday night before class on 2/4, at least one reaction paragraph to the opinion paper of one of your classmates on the blog. You are encouraged to agree or disagree with whatever is said, as long as you are civil about it. Good luck!
