Thesis

Stop by on May 9th, when my thesis will be available!

In my thesis, I argue that “The Dead” is a ghost story. Though James Joyce’s brother Stanislaus claimed that it was a story “about ghosts,” some scholars have dismissed the idea, claiming that the ghosts in “The Dead” are only memories or metaphors. But studying the way consciousness is represented in the narrative of “The Dead” demonstrates that the ghosts of Michael Furey and the ghostly presence of Ireland’s history haunt the story from the very beginning before being fully revealed in the end.
