Two Macaulay students are introducing a fresh and interesting perspective to feminist conversation with their new video series Feminist Freestyles, produced by SlamPow! Productions.
“We hope this series will connect with viewers and serve an underfed Youtube audience looking for queer black feminist content,” says producer Samantha Riddell.
SlamPow! Productions, created by Macaulay’s own Shanika Powell and Riddell, produces YouTube videos on topics including popular rap songs, the Harlem shake, and the twerking phenomenon. In their latest series, filmed in conjunction with CUNY Macaulay New Media Lab, rappers represent famous feminist figures, from as far back as Eve and as recent as Malala Yousafzai. Analogous to the widely popular “Epic Rap Battles of History” YouTube channel, Feminist Freestyles tackles a different feminist topic in each video. Multiple characters rap one after the other, each bringing a humorous and intriguing argument to the table.
The first two videos have received over five thousand views and many positive reviews from the YouTube community. The comments of most users relay exactly what SlamPow! hopes to accomplish: an all-inclusive and creative channel that will capture the interest of anyone who swings by their page.
