Market & Neighborhood Conflict

The severe income inequalities that exist between the Cooperative Market and the residents of the Hunts Point area have been a point of contention for both parties. Despite employing many New Yorkers, most workers are from outside the Hunts Point neighborhood, leaving locals struggling to find steady jobs in the area. The rundown state of the neighborhood has also been cited as a possible reason for the consideration of moving some facilities to New Jersey. At this point, the Market is in a state of limbo with regards to the neighborhood, which is felt by residents themselves who are struggling between the economic inequalities present and the desire to keep such a major business in the Hunts Point area.
