Music

The music and sound in each of the three performances varied greatly. The first performance featured Chopin’s Mazurkas on the piano, which originated from Polish folk music. Many couple dances are choreographed to Mazurkas, which is primarily what the first act focused on. The ambition behind the dance was to exemplify Polish soldiers’ heroism, and I believe that the music choice justified it very well.

The second performance did not have any music at all. The dance was initiated by a shriek for Max, and then the dancers performed in silence. It was so quiet, that the audience was able to hear the dancers’ breathing. There were some parts in the dance that the dancers utilized their bodies for sound. They stomped and clapped their thighs and stomachs to create a beat to which they can dance.

The third performance had mixed sounds for different moods. The moods of the music were reflected in the dance. For example, light and airy music was played in the part where dancers seemed to be very happy and smiling.
