Teamwork

When one talks about teamwork in dance, one usually associates it with the relationship between the dancers. However, I feel that there is a special case when watching Jose Limon’s work. In the second act, we witness the fall of Maximilian, an emperor, by the hands of the President (the invader). All of this, however, is witnessed through the eyes of the Empress, Carlota. This whole dance is based on true events as there was an emperor of Mexico named Maximilian and sure enough the wife was named Carlota. How does teamwork apply here?  Well teamwork doesn’t have to necessarily be about the dancers only. Teamwork is when two forces work together to reach a common goal. Here, teamwork is seen between dance and history. Out of all the acts, Act 2 was the only one without music. Why? Well it is because it was the only Act to tell a real story as opposed to the symbolic meanings of Time in Act 3 or the happy dances in Mazurka (Act 1). The relationship between the style of the Act and History made this Act the best one from the show. It was engaging and it was real.
