Overall, I had a great time at the STEAM festival. I met a lot of nice students from all over the CUNY campuses, and I got to see a lot of well-made projects, from both Seminars 1 and 3. I was asked about my project by people who seemed genuinely interested in art and what my group and I brought, and listening to people talking passionately about projects that they worked hard for was great to experience. Personally, I enjoyed all of the projects I saw, but one particular one caught my interest more than others. It was a project regarding the “stubbornness” of people in Jamaica Bay during the Hurricane Sandy incident when they were offered service and support. While the STEAM festival was a great time, there was one thing I particularly didn’t enjoy about it, and that was just its unorganized layout. When the students were told what to do, there was no sense of direction. Everyone was just walking around and doing their own thing, which led to many just walking out, not caring about what the festival had to offer. Regardless, I had a good time at this event and I can’t wait to see what other events Macaulay has in store for me.

STEAM Festival 2018 Reflections By Anooja John
I thoroughly enjoyed my first experience of the STEAM Festival. It was truly a wonderful way to end Seminar 1, as students got to not only express their own creativity in the arts, but also learn about their fellow peers’ work. Some of the projects I learned about included face masks, mannequins, and analysis about moss. I was really engaged in conversation with several other students, as they displayed great interest in my project. Many people asked about how our group got the idea to create a photo collage in the shape of the Venus symbol, so I also enjoyed explaining this aspect of our project.
I would have liked it if the festival was a bit more organized. It was hectic in the beginning trying to find my group but eventually the situation was sorted out. It was also difficult to navigate between different rooms. However, this was a minor issue and it did not affect my overall experience of STEAM 2018.
My favorite part of the festival was certainly the Makerspace; I created two large magnets that are currently hanging on my refrigerator and even looked up magnet creating machines. Unfortunately, they are a bit too expensive. Nevertheless, I am that much more grateful that the Macaulay Honors College provided such opportunities for students!
