When I asked the question, “Has living in NYC affected any of your habits, your lifestyle, etc.?” all my interviewees brought up the subject of food. Whether it was the lack of French food, the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables, the difference in food service/food in social contexts, or the sacrifice of a healthy diet, food was a recurring theme. While I do not think this is necessarily a cultural theme, this is nonetheless an important one in the lives of those living abroad. Living in a different country changes fundamental aspects of our lives, such as what we eat.

All the interviewees mentioned that their diet has changed while living in New York. One of the obvious reasons is that many of the typical French food items are not available in American grocery stores. However, many have also stated that the lack of fresh fruit and vegetables is a problem. One interviewee, Ronan, mentioned that the amount of work and time dedicated to it has made it almost impossible for him to cook at home. Instead, he eats out most of the time and therefore has gained weight.

Many of the interviewees have also stated an increase in weight.

A few brought up differences in food at grocery markets. While Jessica remarked how surprised she was when she entered Whole Foods and saw how beautifully displayed the fruits and vegetables were, Hélène was surprised at how there was a lack of fresh produce in Target, the nearest grocery market to her first apartment.

In terms of food service, Hélène also mentioned that she was surprised the McDonald’s by Brooklyn College did not have the food already pre-made. It was slower than she expected. Meanwhile, Angelique mentioned that restaurants in NYC were all so focused on fast service, dim lighting, and loud music. She, however, prefers the French tendency of little service (waiters barely interrupting you) and a setting where conversation and intimacy is possible. She also noted that she was unaccustomed to the act of going out to eat as a casual social event. She had generally reserved eating dinner at a restaurant for close friends only.
