Mosholu Preservation Corporation

Headquartered in what is now the Historic Williamsbridge Reservoir Keeper’s House, the Mosholu Preservation Corporation (MPC) is a non profit community development organization supported and run by Montefiore Medical Center. The organization has become an integral part of Norwood’s fabric and is the largest contributor to the advancement of Norwood’s commercial, economic, and community status.

MPC was originally established in 1981 to combat housing deterioration and widespread abandonment in Norwood. The MPC would purchase dilapidated property, revitalize and restructure, and then resell. A large focus of the MPC at the time was to convert deteriorated apartment housing into privately owned condominiums. Montefiore Medical Center depended then, as it does now, heavily on the stability of the community it lies in. As the largest employer and healthcare provider in the Bronx, Montefiore Medical Center understood the need to improve the quality of life for all of its constituents. The medical center vowed to restore the community to heights it had not previously witnessed. In doing so, the Norwood section of the Bronx “would remain a jewel of a place to live and work” as stated by the MPC director, Dart Westphal, on the 25 year anniversary in 2006.

Proving successful in housing development and with continued financial support from Montefiore, MPC transformed into a multi-faceted organization seeking to improve other aspects of Norwood and its neighboring communities. MPC began ventures for commercial and economic advancement, educational reform, and recreational areas. MPC is now on the front lines of many community challenges, hoping to improve the community’s image even further.
