Based on these statistics, Columbia’s students and faculty have their share of diversity, but this diversity might come at a cost to the neighborhood as they want access to food and shops that are not already present in the neighborhood. Moreover, the neighborhood itself can actually become more standardized as the big chains that have been accepted as the cultural norm in the United States move in and monopolize the neighborhood.

Morningside Heights and Harlem:

Morningside Heights itself is far different from its surrounding areas. These statistics show that the majority of the population is white and most of the people are in their late teens to late twenties. Surrounding neighborhoods such as Manhattanville and Hamilton Heights, are also young, but white people form minorities in both neighborhoods. Moreover, in Central and East Harlem people of color highly outnumber white people. These statistics indicate a serious shift in demographics in Morningside Heights, which used to be a part of Harlem, a highly African American area since the early 20th century.
