— Forest House Apartments
Forest House Apartments is a new Green Apartment Building that is made to be affordable to low income families. It is located at 1071 Tinton Avenue, Bronx NY. Unlike most buildings around it, it offers many green features. One amazing feature is its rooftop farm. The greenhouse will use left-over heat from the residential portion of the building and water harvested from the greenhouse roof. The farm will be used to provide fresh, perishable vegetables to a local non-profit food cooperative. It is projected to be able to feed up to 4,500 people not only in the building, but in the surrounding neighborhood. This neighborhood suffers from “food desert” effect. This means that the low income families don’t have access to affordable fruits and vegetables. The rooftop farm will make a significant contribution to food access and improving public health in the neighborhood.
Other features include:
- Direct drive elevators use a fraction of horsepower as compared to conventional elevators without machine rooms and a/c requirement
- Motion sensor light switching and bi-level lighting in public and utility area
- Oversized window glazing to allow for greater daylighting
- Rainwater harvesting system for greenhouse and irrigation purposes
- Dual flush extra low flow 0.8/1.28 gpf toilets, 1gpm showerheads, .5gpm faucets
*only some features, not all.
The best part about these apartments is the affordability of these apartments. The cost of a studio apartment or a one/two bedroom apartment is about the same as the average rent price for a regular non-green apartment.
