The need for energy from sustainable renewable resources has existed for many years already. The US Energy Information Administration estimates that the top three sources of energy for New York State in 2011 are natural gas, motor gasoline (excluding ethanol), and nuclear electric power. Natural gas is often seen as a transition fuel, facilitating the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy due to its relatively low price and abundance. However, natural gas– like other fossil fuels– will eventually run out; motor gasoline will also eventually run out; and Indian Point–New York City’s main source of nuclear energy–is old and in need of replacement.
