Virtual Tour

On the tour today, we will visit important historical sites, learn about their significance, and study their current state in light of NYU expansion and gentrification. We will begin at Washington Square Park and explore its background and current day use. Then we will continue to the Jeffrey S. Gould Welcome Center, one of NYU’s main Washington Square Park Campus buildings to talk about the impact of NYU’s 2031 expansion plan. We will see the former location of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory and discuss the benefits of its current use as an NYU science and research facility versus a museum highlighting the significance of the fire on labor laws. From there we will see two different facades, that of Edgar Allen Poe’s former residence and that of Fire House Patrol #2. We will learn about the difference between the preservation processes of each and analyze the significance of maintaining these locations instead of allowing them to change with New York City.
