Netcost Food Market
Netcost is a Ukrainian/Russian Restaurant found on Amboy Road in Staten Island. We originally had the intent of going to Nova food market but this market shut down a few years ago.
Netcost sold great variety of smoked sausage, prepared European delicacies and scrumptious cakes. Most of the food is Russian or Polish, so it is not for diet-minded, although healthy foods are represented in very diverse produce, with grains and dairy isles. The store is bright and clean and employees were very friendly. While it served Ukrainian food, it sold many goods that were publicly appealing such as healthy snacks that are familiar to everyone. This was purely done for business reasons because if Netcost limited the foods to just Russian/Ukrainian, it wouldn’t gather many customers. Its organic taste in food apart from its culturally diverse foods of Russian and Ukrainian backgrounds makes it publically appealing. This food market held foods of great nutritional value. We also saw foods of Italian, French and German background, which makes it ethnically diverse.
As for the location, being on Amboy road makes it easily noticeable. It doesn’t just appeal to those of Ukrainian/Russian descent but to coming drivers and pedestrians.
One food that we found unique is A quick snack called “Fitto” which are light flavored rolls with cheese. It’s a salty grain snack, which came in a chips packaging. This was unique and seemed to be an easy snack to have that has slight nutritional value. This was just one of the many unique foods found in this market.
Ultimately, this market stays true to the Ukrainian background while branching out to other ethnicities as well.
