“How Not to Make a Doc”

I realize you are not just making a documentary, but this short video has some helpful thoughts on preparing for interviews, thinking critically about how you present your subjects, as well as copyright issues: http://www.centerforsocialmedia.org/fair-use/videos/podcasts/how-not-make-documentary

Portraits of Place
March 29, 2011 | Photos & Field Notes, Working with Video | Leave a Comment
About this project:
CoLab sees that it’s easy to pass judgment on a place. Run-down houses probably mean mass-foreclosure. A bustling shopping street probably means financial wealth. A community garden probably signifies an engaged neighborhood. Someone who spends the day on a corner is probably homeless. For this project, CoLab is seeking story series that take a closer look than probably.

Before Tuesday’s workshop, please look through the website archive and start to gather ideas for your own course site: http://macaulay.cuny.edu/it/?q=node/40 Which websites do you think “work”? Which elements of these sites would you like to see on your own course site?

After the field trip
March 3, 2011 | Uncategorized | 2 Comments
Hi all:
I hope your walking tour of East Harlem went well. If you have taken photos (and video), which I hope you have, here’s what you need to do:
1.) If you haven’t already, create a Flickr account. Log in and join the class Flickr group: http://www.flickr.com/groups/eastharlemjournal/
2.) Upload your images. Use the description box to fill in as much information as possible for each image. Under the “Actions” button, you will also be able to add a note, tags, or locate your image on a map. Please do this when appropriate for each photo.
2.) Please send ALL the photos you upload to our class group. You do this under “Actions.” Click “Add to Group.” You should see “East Harlem Journal” as one of your choices. It is a good idea, once you’ve added your photos, to click back on the group link and make sure they are there.
Once all the photos are up on the Flickr group we can start looking at your work and thinking about how to work with the photos. It seems like you should post your photos before you return to the site. This way you can see what you did photograph, what you didn’t, and what you might like to reshoot.

Uploading Video
February 15, 2011 | Uncategorized, Working with Video | Leave a Comment
There are two sites that you can upload video to. I prefer Vimeo because the images look nicer, but if you already have a Youtube account, this maybe easier for you. Both sites will let you add description, comment, and tag video. If you upload video after Monday’s site visit, please post the links to the course site on the “Field Videos” page. You can also grab the embed code and embed the video on the page.
Next week, I will post a “looking at video” tutorial here on the course site that will help you draw out themes from the footage you’ve collected.
