Food Desert Map

This map, which was aggregated using various Source Studies, identifies 4 areas on Staten Island which are considered “Food Deserts.” Arrochar and St. George are Official USDA Food Deserts, while Arden Heights and Arlington are not classified as such. Yet all four of these areas have one thing in common: they lack access to fresh food.

The interactive map below identifies the four census tracts that have been classified as low access according to the USDA and our Source Studies, with various “pins” identifying schools, pharmacies, delis and restaurants within those areas. While there are restaurants and delis which offer prepared or packaged food to the population in that area, there is a lack of healthy, fresh food sources such as grocery stores or markets.
