Music Under NYC: A Glimpse at the Art & Culture of Subway performers

Opera singers, guitar players, violinists, ensembles- for many people these are clear examples of what may be classified as “art”. They are a form of expression of the natural sense of human creativity and a production of one’s innate imaginations, dreams, and inspirations. Where can you find artists such as these?

Many of us expect to find artist such as these perhaps at music festivals, talent shows, or international showcases. Yet amazingly enough, we have the privilege of living in NYC and having the opportunity to see these performances for free. Even more so, we do not have to look very far.. In many cases this explosion of art takes place right below our very own feet! Our very feet? Yes, in what is recognized as the NYC subway stations!

For this project, Renisha, Leandra, and myself (Shabel)decided to take a look at the arts that surround us everyday! A form of art that is open to be experienced by all and ignored by many- music and showcases by NYC subway performers licensed under the program Music Under New York. A program that has been running since 1985, and that has provided quality music to the commuting public.

Ultimately, through our underground adventure, we were able to produce a short movie highlighting this often ignored display of art. Not only were we able to learn about the MUNY program, but most importantly, we were able to realize how New York City is vibrant and powerful in its expression of the art’s and music. If we take at least one minute of our time, stop , and look and experience our surroundings- we will be able to submerge ourselves into the true meaning of human performance and creativity.
