Information Session: U.S. Fulbright Student Program – April 1st

Please join the QC Fellowships office for a virtual information session on the U.S. Fulbright Student program to be held via Zoom on April 1st during Free Hour.  Fulbright grants fund a year of overseas graduate study, independent research or work as an assistant English teacher.  The program has been a transformative experience for many Queens College students, and many report that the application process has helped them clarify their goals.  We are very fortunate to have Lee Rivers of the Institute for International Education, the agency that coordinates the Fulbright program, as our guest speaker.  Please see below for a number of ways you can join the session and remember that Dr. Egan, our fellowships advisor, is available to answer your questions and to work with you throughout the application process.

Upcoming Fulbright Information Sessions

Although currently suspended globally, the Fulbright U.S. Student program is continuing to plan for the next application cycle.  Queens College students have been very successful in Fulbright competitions and have deeply valued their overseas experiences and the process of applying.  The Fellowships office is currently working on a presentation featuring QC Fulbrighters and we will provide further details as they are finalized.

We are also very fortunate to have Lee Rivers from the Institute of International Education lead a virtual information session on the Fulbright program on Wednesday, April 1, and registration details will be sent via QCMailers.

During these times of distance activities, IIE’s extensive online resources will be extremely useful as you think about applying for a Fulbright.  Here are a few webinars you might find particularly helpful.

OPPORTUNITIES AT THE HERTOG FOUNDATION

It’s not too early to think about how to make the most of your summer.  Here are some exciting, fully-funded  opportunities for study in Washington, D.C.  Please feel free to contact me for assistance with your applications.

Political Studies Program 

  • Eligibility: Undergraduates and very recent graduates (2016 or 2017)
  • Location: Washington, DC
  • Duration: 7-week program, June 18-August 5, 2017
  • Stipend: Provides housing and some meals, plus stipend

Hertog Fellows study classic texts in political thought and some of the seminal documents of American politics with an outstanding faculty. In addition, students study selected public policy issues with some of those who helped formulate and implement those policies.

War Studies Program 

  • Eligibility: College juniors, seniors and very recent graduates (2016 or 2017)
  • Location: Washington, DC
  • Duration: 2-week program, Summer 2017 (dates TBA)
  • Stipend: Provides housing and some meals, plus stipend

The War Studies Program, run by the Institute for the Study of War, aims to educate undergraduate students about the theory, practice, organization, and control of war and military forces. Over the course of the program, students will learn from and interact with distinguished senior leaders in the national security and military communities, including retired generals and leading intellectuals.

Summer Courses 

  • Eligibility: Undergraduates and very recent graduates (2016 or 2017)
  • Location: Washington, DC
  • Duration: One- to two-week seminars throughout the period of June 25-August 5, 2017
  • Stipend: Provides housing and some meals, plus stipend

This series of one- to two-week seminars allows students to create their own individualized course of study. Younger students are encouraged to apply for these seminars, as are upperclassmen who have other obligations during the summer. Offerings include topics such as American Political Thought, American Democratic Capitalism, Thucydides and Today’s Challenges, and Landmark Supreme Court Cases.

The application deadline is Monday, February 6, 2017.

Early decision deadline is Monday, December 5, 2016

Scholarship for Asian Students

The online APIASF/AANAPISI Scholarship application is now open, and this year, Queens College is once again a partner institution.  This means that eligible students may apply for scholarships of up to $5,000.  The foundation also offers scholarship winners opportunities for academic advising, career guidance, and the chance to connect with current students and former scholarship winners from other campuses.

To be eligible you must:

  • Be of Asian and/or Pacific Islander ethnicity as defined by The U.S. Census.
  • Be a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the U.S. or a citizen of the U.S. Freely Associated States.
  • Be enrolled as a full-time student in a degree program at Queens College during the 2017 Spring Semester.
  • Have applied for federal financial aid using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), although you do not necessarily have to be receiving federal aid.

The application deadline is October 31, 2016.  To learn more, please visit the link above and join the Honors office for an information session on this important program.

The German Bundestag invites you, in cooperation with the with the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Freie Universität Berlin and Technische Universität Berlin to apply for an International Parliamentary Scholarship (IPS) to spend five months in Berlin. The IPS program is aimed at highly qualified young men and women who are interested in politics and who wish to play an active and responsible role in shaping the democratic future of their country. The German Bundestag, the German Parliament, offers young people the opportunity to get to know the German parliamentary system and political decision-making processes and to gain practical experience of parliamentary work during a 13-week work placement with a Member of the Bundestag. The scholarship-winners are chosen by the German Bundestag’s independent selection panel.

Requirements:

  • Citizenship of participant country
  • University degree
  • Very good knowledge of German
  • Under the age of 30 at the start of the scholarship

Scholarship:

  • 500 euros per month
  • Free accommodation
  • Insurance and travel expenses

Summer Study in the UK: Fellowship for First-Year Students and Sophomores

Summer Public Health Internships with the Centers for Disease Control

Are you looking for a paid summer research opportunity?  Read on to learn more about some wonderful opportunities offered by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).  Applications for all programs are due Sunday, January 31st, and the links below provide full details of each program including the application requirements.

Internship #1
Public Health Leadership & Learning Undergraduate Student Success (PLLUSS) Program
Application Deadline: Sunday, January 31, 2016
Program Dates: May 30 – August 12, 2016

Brief Description: The PLLUSS Program is a 10-week public health leadership and research program. The PLLUSS Program is for undergraduate sophomore and junior students minoring or majoring in public health with at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4-point scale.  Students must complete sufficient course credit hours during the program for a minor in public health. The PLLUSS program is conducted at three collaborative research sites: (1) Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI) and Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, (2) University of Cincinnati and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (UC-NIOSH), and (3) California State University-Los Angeles. PLLUSS Program students will participate in public health research, education on health disparities and urban health issues, professional development, and community health promotion activities. Students will be encouraged to produce peer-reviewed publications and attend a national public health meeting. Students will receive mentorship with the goal of successful acceptance and completion of graduate or professional school in the public health area.  Following Orientation (May 30, 2016 to June 3, 2016), KKI and UC-NIOSH scholars’ research experience will be June 3, 2016 to August 5, 2016.  Scholars placed at California State University-Los Angeles will return home after the orientation until the University of Southern California program starts on June 15, 2016 to August 12, 2016.

A $3,500 stipend is provided to all program participants.  Housing and round-trip travel is available for out-of-state participants.

Maternal Child Health Careers / Research Initiatives for Student Enhancement-Undergraduate Program (MCHC/RISE-UP)
Application Deadline:  Sunday, January 31, 2016
Program Dates: May 30, 2016 to August 12, 2016

Brief Description: The MCHC/RISE-UP Program is a 10-week summer public health leadership program designed for undergraduates in their junior and senior year and recent baccalaureate degree students (within 12 months of the MCHC/RISE-UP orientation). MCHC/RISE-UP is a national consortium of institutions including the Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI), Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, University of Southern California, California State University-LA, and University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine Center for Disabilities.  Three tracks are offered: (1) clinical (KKI only), (2) research, and (3) community engagement and advocacy.  Following Orientation (May 30, 2016 to June 3, 2016), the scholars at the KKI and University of South Dakota sites will begin their MCHC/RISE-UP experience on June 3, 2016 and end on August 5, 2016. Scholars placed at the University of Southern California will return home after the orientation until the University of Southern California program starts on June 15, 2016 and will end August 12, 2016.

Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program (Ferguson Fellows)

Program Dates: May 30, 2016 to July 29, 2016

Brief Description: The Dr. James A. Ferguson Emerging Infectious Diseases Fellowship is a 9-week summer program for students currently enrolled full-time in a medical, dental, pharmacy, veterinary, or public health graduate program who are interested in participating in infectious diseases and health disparities research. Ferguson Fellows are encouraged to submit their research to national meetings and for publication.

A $4,000 stipend is provided to all program participants.  Housing and round-trip travel is available for out-of-state participants.
