About This Site

For more than a century, movies have been offering up vivid portraits of neighborhoods throughout New York City. Films like "Hester Street," "Godfather II," "Saturday Night Fever," nearly everything Spike Lee and Woody Allen ever made, and countless other works have helped us understand the unparalleled variety of the city.

For this project, students of Seminar 2 ("The People of New York City") of the Macaulay Honors College have presented portraits of New York City neighborhoods inspired by watching a series of films set in various parts of the city. In some cases, students revisited the neighborhood in which the film was set, ie. the Lower East Side of "Hester Street." In others, they visited a neighborhood similar to one portrayed in a film, ie. (after watching "Saturday Night Fever"), the Belmont section of the Bronx, the borough's own Little Italy. Here are their stories.
