The artdiscusses uses the UN’s view on the likelihood of Syria maintaining the ceasefire and Secretary General Ban Kimoon’s call for UN solidarity
Syria already stopped enforcing the ceasefire and began shelling. I think it is obvious, that there was never a desire to ceasefire on the part of the Syrian Regime. A ceasefire means instant huge protests and square occupations in Syrian cities followed by the slow weakening and fall of the Syrian government. The Syrian regime is determined to keep power. Kofi Annan’s ceasefire plan is a last attempt at peacefully resolving the struggle, and is designed to demonstrate upon failure that some sort of foreign involvement or intervention is needed to stop the killing.
I agree with you on the ceasefire. It seemed more like a bad trick to buy more time and deflect the grave nature of the issue. Our silence is something we will likely regret in the future.
