Should the Times Be a Truth Vigilante?

The NYT public editor, Arthur S. Brisbane, posed the following question to readers of his column today: `Should the NYT be a truth vigilante?‘.

No one would argue that media has the power to influence public opinion, but who is responsible when a lack of fact-checking by reporters results in fiction?  For over 100 years the Times has run on the philosophy that news should be fit to print.   Although this has proved to be an incredibly successful strategy for the paper, some journalism professors would argue that calling out falsehoods is a reporters job.  By posing this question to his readers, Brisbane raises important issues in the media consumption and accountability.
